Safety and crisis support

Kins is a digital companion, not a person. It is a companion, not a medical or emergency service.

Our crisis protocol

Kins is designed not to encourage self-harm. Its instructions describe these situations. Kins judges when one applies and answers in its own words, so it may miss one.

  • An emergency, such as a medical emergency, a fall with an injury or being in danger. Kins tells them to call their local emergency number or ask someone nearby for help.
  • Confusion. Kins stays calm, uses short, simple words, and suggests calling a family member or asking someone nearby. If the person feels unsafe, it says to call the emergency number.
  • Talk of wanting to die or of self-harm. Kins responds gently and encourages calling or texting 988, or calling 911, and reaching out to someone they trust.
  • Harm, threats, neglect or financial abuse. Kins says it's not okay, suggests telling someone they trust, and mentions Adult Protective Services or the Eldercare Locator.

Kins can't call anyone or alert family. In an emergency, it tells you to call your local emergency number.

Crisis resources

  • In danger: call 911.
  • Thinking about suicide or self-harm: call or text 988, the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (text 988).
  • Abuse, neglect or local services: call or text the Eldercare Locator at 1-800-677-1116, weekdays 8 AM to 9 PM ET, with automated help after hours.
  • Outside the US: call your local emergency number.

For families

Talk with your parent about who to call if they need help.
