Our Commitment to Your Privacy

At Kins, we believe your personal information belongs to you. We built Kins to be a trusted companion for older adults and their families — and that trust starts with how we handle your data.

This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have. We've tried to write this in plain language because we believe you shouldn't need a lawyer to understand your privacy rights.

Information We Collect

Information You Provide

  • Account information: Name, email address, phone number when you sign up
  • Profile information: Interests, routines, preferences you share during onboarding
  • Health information: Medication names, schedules, and adherence data you choose to track
  • Conversations: What you say to Kins during voice or text conversations
  • Memories: Personal details, stories, and preferences Kins remembers for you
  • Emergency contacts: Names and phone numbers of caregivers or family members

Information Collected Automatically

  • Usage data: How often you use Kins, features you use, session duration
  • Device information: Device type, operating system, app version
  • Location: Only when you trigger an SOS alert, and only if you've granted permission

How We Use Your Information

  • To provide Kins: Power conversations, remember your preferences, send medication reminders
  • To personalize your experience: Tailor content, morning briefings, and conversation topics to your interests
  • To keep you safe: Enable SOS features and notify emergency contacts when you need help
  • To share with caregivers: Provide peace-of-mind updates to family members you've authorized
  • To improve Kins: Understand how people use the app so we can make it better
  • To communicate with you: Send important updates about your account or the service

How We Share Your Information

We do not sell your personal information. We share data only in these cases:

  • With your caregivers: Family members you've added can see check-in summaries and medication adherence
  • With service providers: Companies that help us run Kins (cloud hosting, SMS delivery) under strict privacy agreements
  • For safety: Emergency contacts receive alerts and location during SOS events
  • When required by law: If we're legally obligated to disclose information

Your Conversations with Kins

When you talk to Kins, your conversations are processed by AI to generate responses. We use OpenAI's technology to power these conversations.

  • Conversations are used to improve your personal experience with Kins
  • We do not use your conversations to train general AI models
  • You can view and delete memories Kins has stored in the "What Kins Knows" section of the app

Health Information

We treat medication and health-related information with extra care:

  • Health data is encrypted at rest and in transit
  • Only you and caregivers you authorize can access your health information
  • Kins never provides medical advice, diagnoses, or medication dosing recommendations
  • We are not a covered entity under HIPAA, but we follow industry best practices for health data security

Data Retention

  • We keep your data as long as your account is active
  • If you delete your account, we delete your personal data within 30 days
  • Some data may be retained longer if required by law or for legitimate business purposes (like fraud prevention)

Your Rights and Choices

You have control over your data:

  • Access: View what information Kins has stored about you
